Born and raised in Los Angeles, California, Matthew Nelson began playing music at the age of 10, laying the foundation for his dynamic career as a performer, composer, and educator.
A graduate of the University of California, Irvine, he was awarded select honors and studied with esteemed faculty including Jerry Pinter, Darek Oles, Kei Akagi, Michael Dessen, and Bobby Rodriguez, among others. In addition to maintaining a private saxophone studio, he works as an in-demand woodwind technician for various schools throughout Orange County.
Nelson performs regularly across Orange and Los Angeles County at venues such as The Mint LA, Saint Rocke, and the Harmony Room. A core member of several ensembles, including Joe-tet and Albion Kristof, he appears on the latter’s debut album, Eclipse, and has performed with popular artists such as Pilot Touhill.
Since 2021, Matthew has composed and performed extensively for dance works showcased in UC Irvine’s “Dance Escape” and “New Slate,” as well as various thesis projects, which can be heard on YouTube. His collaboration with Dr. S Ama Wray as a guest artist in Embodiology® workshops has further shaped his creative journey. Additionally, his work has been showcased at the American College Dance Association Regional Conference, where he composed and performed original pieces.
Passionate about developing young artists, he has been a dedicated educator at Fountain Valley High School since 2022, where he serves as Jazz Director. In addition to his role in the music department, he works with the school’s theatre program, leading an ongoing Music for Actors workshop designed to equip students with the skills and confidence to learn music independently. He also serves as the theatre department’s Musical Director for their annual spring musicals.
Matthew’s multifaceted career reflects his deep commitment to the performing arts and to empowering the next generation of musical artists.
